STORY
A Fateful Encounter
In Umamusume Stories, Matikanefukukitaru and the Trainer meet at a shrine. She explains that hours beforehand she had experienced a vision in which Shiraoki revealed to her that she would meet "the One" in this location. At first, the Trainer is not convinced, however Matikanefukukitaru promises to show off her skills in the upcoming tryouts.
The next day, during training, Matikanefukukitaru lets divinations determine her actions: trying to convince Silence Suzuka to partner run and swim thirty-nine laps alongside her as she believes it to be her lucky number for the day.
Fortune's Favor
Matikanefukukitaru eventually asks the Trainer for help with her training who reluctantly accepts and organizes a scrimmage with Taiki Shuttle. Matikanefukukitaru is immediately hesitant, thinking that she can't possibly compete against Taiki in a race. She begs to do fortune-telling before running and it tells her that she will have great fortune which boosts her confidence tenfold. Despite this, Fukukitaru still loses the scrimmage which makes her run off crying in frustration.
At night, the Trainer finds Matikanefukukitaru performing divinations on campus. She explains to them about "the Great Shiraoki", a benevolent goddess that appears in her dreams and guides her whenever she's troubled. Fukukitaru's belief in this goddess is unwavering. She goes as far as saying that if it weren't for Shiraoki's guidance she wouldn't had gotten as far as she has.
The Harbinger of Tryouts
A few days before the tryouts, Matikanefukukitaru runs into the Trainers' room in despair after a divination tells her she will experience great misfortune. Soon after, she discovers the catalogue of experienced runners she will have to go against in the tryouts which does little to soothe her nerves.
As a result, she doesn't do well during her training which makes her admit that she doesn't think she's good enough to run in the Twinkle Series. She explains to the Trainer that she had an older sister who was much more talented than her and who she's often compared to, which made her doubt her own ability to race. Then, one night, Shiraoki appeared in her dreams telling her to run and that this would open a path to move forward. Choosing to believe in these words was what led Matikanefukukitaru to Tracen Academy. Furthermore, she clarifies that she wholeheartedly believes in her fortune-telling, saying that it has guided her throughout her entire life.
Success in Defeat
At the tryouts, after excitedly saying she'll "try not to lose too hard", Matikanefukukitaru finishes in last place. Despite this, multiple trainers want to scout her on account of her powerful last spurt, however, her Trainer has already been decided by fate.
Don't Throw Out My Good Luck!
One day, the Trainer discovers of Matikanefukukitaru's gigantic "lucky item collection" after
the pile of trash treasure topples over and buries Fukukitaru's roommate beneath it. Despite
being a hazard to herself and others, Fukukitaru is too attached to her items to consider destroying them,
she panics at the Trainer's suggestion to burn them at the academy's incinerator and begs on her knees for
the objects to be spared.
Eventually the Trainer offers to hold onto her items, which she accepts as a temporary solution while she decides on what to do with them.
(Despite it being specified that the victim of Fuku's lucky items is her roommate, Matikanetannhauser is nowhere to be seen in this event and her name is not even mentioned. R.I.P.)
In Search of Fortuity
The Trainer runs into Matikanefukukitaru on her break day. She tells them that her morning divination told her that she would have horrendous luck. To counteract this, Fukukitaru decided to stuff as many lucky items as she could into her pockets. She also explains that spending time with loved ones will improve her luck as she asks for the Trainer to acompany her.
She takes the Trainer on a quest for more lucky items, making them open a candy wrapper to determine their luck, buying Daruma dolls at the general store and finishing their day with a prayer at the shrine. She tells the Trainer about the first time she dreamed of Shiraoki as a child. The goddess told her to run and that she would win, this gave her the courage to run at a race in her school where she indeed won despite not being very good at running. Since then, Matikanefukukitaru has committed to performing fortune-telling everytime she runs.
Matikanefukukitaru believes that without her fortune she is nothing. This makes the Trainer want to act on her overreliance on luck to push her forward, so they take her to an arcade and make her try to get a plushie on a claw machine without her lucky charms on her. Fukukitaru is terrified as her lucky Trainer even takes a step back to ensure she's completely "luckless". However, after a few tries, Matikanefukukitaru does manage to score a prize, which shocks her. This helps her realize that she is capable of achieving things by her own efforts without over relying on fortune.
Farewell, My Fortune
During Summer training camp, Matikanefukukitaru brings her lucky items with her in hopes of finding somewhere to properly say goodbye to her precious charms. After some back and forth, the Trainer brings Matikanefukukitaru to a river, suggesting she gives her items a river memorial sendoff.
One by one, Fukukitaru throws her lucky items into the stream, saying goodbye and thanking them for their service. However, she panics once she realizes that the river would eventually lead to the sea, which means that throwing her items here would be littering. Thankfully, a grate at the end of the stream catches all her charms, allowing for a proper disposal of them.
Back at the beach, Matikanefukukitaru and her Trainer burn her lucky items in a bonfire, giving part of her excess luck charms a proper sendoff. She clarifies she's not giving up on her fortune-telling, but that now she understands that she is capable of achieving whatever she wants by her own power.
